Are GAF Timberline HD Shingles Discontinued? (HD vs. HDZ Explained)

If you've been researching a new roof, you may have run into a confusing question: are GAF Timberline HD shingles discontinued? The short answer is yes — but it's good news, not bad. Here's exactly what happened and what it means for your home.

Yes — Timberline HD was replaced by Timberline HDZ

Around 2020, GAF phased out the Timberline HD shingle and replaced it with an upgraded version: Timberline HDZ. So if a contractor quotes you "Timberline HD," they're almost certainly referring to today's HDZ — the direct successor and now North America's #1-selling shingle.

This wasn't a downgrade or a quality problem with HD. GAF simply improved the product and renamed it. If your current roof is Timberline HD, it's still a solid shingle — it just isn't manufactured under that name anymore.

What changed from HD to HDZ?

The "Z" in HDZ points to the biggest upgrade — a redesigned nailing zone:

  • StrikeZone nailing area — a much wider, easier-to-hit nail zone. This makes installation faster and, more importantly, more accurate. Improperly nailed shingles are one of the top causes of premature roof failure, so this genuinely matters.
  • LayerLock technology — a stronger bond between shingle layers for better wind and tear resistance.
  • WindProven limited wind warranty — when installed with the required GAF accessories by a certified contractor, HDZ can carry a wind warranty with no maximum wind-speed limitation.
  • Lifetime limited warranty — on qualifying homes (the older Timberline HD was often sold as a "30-year" shingle).

In short: same trusted Timberline look, meaningfully better performance and installation quality.

Are the colors the same?

Mostly, yes. HDZ carries the same popular Timberline palette homeowners love — Pewter Gray, Charcoal, Weathered Wood, Barkwood, and more. If you're comparing options, see our full breakdown in GAF Shingle Colors: The Timberline HDZ Lineup, and our deeper look at the shingle itself in GAF Timberline HDZ Shingles.

"I have Timberline HD and need a repair — what now?"

If your existing roof is Timberline HD and you need a repair or a few replacement shingles, don't panic:

  • HDZ is designed to blend with the HD look, so a skilled roofer can usually match a repair closely.
  • Color match matters — weathering and dye-lot differences mean a good contractor will select the closest current color and place repairs thoughtfully.
  • If your HD roof is nearing the end of its life anyway, it may be smarter to plan a full replacement in HDZ rather than chase matching shingles.

An honest inspection tells you which path makes sense — repair or replace.
